I've been such a huge fan of Hunter Harris' work for so long (I read her Usher profile every time I'm about to write a feature of my own) and would love to know: How does she keep her cool when she's interviewing such big celebrities? And what is it like to do longform features that require travel and tons of research?
you are so kind!! when i was in my early 20s and interviewing someone for my first big profile, i was asking my friend (genius writer and profiler alex jung) for advice. i was anxious about whether the subject liked me. alex offered a really instructive reframe: "but what if YOU don't like THEM?" it helped get me out of my head and back into my body. "do i like this person or not" is never the pervading thought when interviewing someone, but it does help me regain some perspective when i'm feeling really insecure or like i'm about to make a fool of myself.
re the longform, it's a real test of my organizational skills lol. there are always so many transcripts and so much note taking (both in my notebook, in my phone, in my head, sometimes on receipts). sometimes the best and greatest material doesn't come until like 3 hours in, so you can't feel too bound to a chronological order of events when you're spending a lot of time with someone or on set. i love researching lmao mostly because I'm just so curious (nosy)

I read your Succession in Italy piece and couldn't wrap my head around how much research needed to be done leading up to the trip and then all of the interviews and in-the-moment observations that had to happen when you were there. thank you for answering my questions!

I just can't with the Baldwins as silly entertainment right now. He literally killed someone. I know it was likely totally unintentional, and I don't believe he should face some kind of eternal exile for it, but it seems like the existence of the show must be painful for Haylna Hutchins' family and I'd like it to go away as soon as possible. I love Jo and Cup of Jo, but I wish you would stop trying to start a conversation about this. It just doesn't vibe with your usual sensitivity.
