Every once in a while I'll walk my kids to school with coffee in a regular mug. It feels like I'm leaning in to gratitude for my little Brooklyn neighborhood and how close and easy everything is!

Also, I love "soft love." I edited an article for Real Simple once about why it sometimes feels easier to be kind and courteous to strangers than it does to our closest loved ones, and why you might want to try treating your loved ones like strangers (in the nice way!). Of course nothing from 2019 is on the internet anymore so I can't link to it here, but it was really thought provoking and has helped me find more tenderness in moments where I just want to unleash my frustration or grumpiness on the closest family member.

Joanna, thank you for the reminder of showing soft love. I needed that today so much. I’m on month 5 of my husband being deployed and whatever soft love reserves I’ve had for my four kids is running fairly low. Being reminded how much soft love can make a difference in their day is exactly what I needed. ❤️

I just finished the new Michelle Williams' show "Dying for Sex" and guys—it was so, so good. You go in thinking it's about one thing, then another, and suddenly you get a wallop of a beautiful realization of what it was about all along. It is all at once moving, sensual, and explosively hilarious. Subversive women-centered storytelling in all the best ways. Cannot recommend enough.

I, too, recently finished it and felt so ALIVE. 10/10 everyone should watch it.

I love all of this, but something about that cycling picture and the little strawberries over the faces of the kids in the background just reminded of why I’m here. We can all care for each other in myriad ways. Taking the time to give those kids their privacy is exactly the kind of respectful consideration that we should be giving without a second thought. We love to see it 😊

Katherine Ryan, a Canadian comedian who’s huge in the UK, has this excellent moment from her Netflix series - I wouldn’t normally link to TikTok but “a mug of tea from home” with only the judgement a posh British person can muster is too good not to share https://www.tiktok.com/@netflix/video/6871185910508178689

I’m at the airport right now after a really tough trip and catching up on Substacks. Just read this, and it felt like a tender hug from a friend. Thank you for these glimmers—I know I can always count on this space and community to point them out.

Totally feel the hair thing...during lockdown my hair got all long and wavy and now I'm leaning into it (and not wasting hours of my life drying my hair), along with ageing in general - how lucky are we!? And may we all notice small glimmers and joys to get us through our days. x

This is so lovely. I’ve been thinking a lot about the soft love I have for all people lately, since we all really need it. I’ll be thinking more about relaxed kindness and soft love now, and trying to keep it in practice. Thank you!!

I also so enjoyed this issue! Been holding on to glimmers and the every day loveliness and normalcy of the world that feels grounded around me (family, friends, strangers). Also I’ve noticed the slightly different look but couldn’t place why, hair looks fab!

Hi :) i am moved by the volunteering project. You democratic Americans are a hope for the world because this affects us all. Go girls!

Speaking of which. I write from Italy. On june 8-9 we will vote to reduce from 10 to 5 the years one need to have a Continuous Residency Certificate in order to be able to ASK for citizenship. (We now have a "blood" right, not a birth right to citizenship). We need at least 25m people to vote otherwise it will be null. The Government is VERY nationalist/anti immigrants and is silencing the infos on the vote. I wonder if you guys could give a shout-out to all the people with an Italian citizenship living in the US (they might be up to 1m!) to register to vote form abroad. They need to register to the AIRE system asap! https://serviziconsolarionline.esteri.it/ScoFE/services/service-info.sco?serviceId=92

and then vote YES.

I would be very glad to explain it further.

Thank you!

I have medium length hair that I air dry. After evening showers, I dry my hair with a towel, then put my still damp hair in a low ponytail, and braid it. In the morning, my hair has manageable waves!
