i used to complain about how i smelled like a coffee shop after working as a barista, and people would go, i love that smell! so i do think it’s a normal thought. but the comment above definitely made me crack up. maybe because it seems really personal, like YOUR clothes must smell so good, instead of something more general lol
Joanna, I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, but never sure when/where it was appropriate to ask - how is Kim? Ever since the update a while back I’ve been thinking of her.
Eleven years ago, I moved to Chattanooga TN for a job, having no reference point for the city or state beyond basic Googling. I came alone on a leap of faith: young and broke and hopeful.
And though I am decidedly more "outsidey" than "outdoorsy," living somewhere with easy access to water, forests, and mountains has made life feel extraordinary. Awe is just so accessible. Strongly recommended for swooners and dreamers - or, you know, people who actually enjoy getting scruffed up in nature. :)
I'm travelling to Miami in April (first time in the USA) and I'd love some help on things to do and local brands to look out for. Please tell me about your city! As it's mostly a work trip I won't have too much time, so I want to cut through TripAdvisor/Google and go straight to your favourites. Thanks so much.
An early welcome to America! Miami is famous for their Cubano sandwiches (french rolls filled with ham, roast pork, swiss(?), mustard and pickles - pressed flat, hot and crisp. It's been a long time since I've been there so I can't recommend a place but look on Yelp for a listing nearby. I still think about the ones I had there!
oooh fun q!!! want to hear from other big salad readers. I love Miami — we used to go for romantic getaways and stay at the Standard, which is off the main drag (so no fratty vibes) and has a giant pool that's as warm as a bathtub. just a great sexy vibe. for dinner, the restaurant the Mandolin feels like you're in Greece! https://www.mandolinrestaurant.com
Miami is so vibrant and fun. If you have a beach day, I'd definitely recommend grabbing sandwiches at Rosetta Bakery and bringing a picnic to the beach. Espanola Way is a great destination for a dinner (a pedestrian street with lights strung between the palm tees.) We stayed at The Plymouth and found it so charming. Enjoy!
Anja's sentiment about moving away from Berlin -"like breaking up with someone you still love"- is exactly how I've been describing my family's move. It's nice to know that someone out there understands that particular feeling.
I love the city/move review! I’m forever in flux between staying in New York, moving back to Athens where my family is, or move somewhere else entirely. It’s so reassuring to see others struggle and deal with this!
i’m on such an irish kick!!! i just finished bad sisters on apple tv, i read the rachel incident, and i saw all of us strangers on friday (which wow, way more about grief than i expected!!). happy to see an irish tv show in the recommendations.
How awkward am I if I don't find that bakery comment that awkward? 😆
OMG sammmmmmmmmeeeeeee

Omg Abbey’s comment on dating profile pics?! I clutched my heart!
YES!!!

she is recovering with her family and we send her so much love! xo
That’s great news. Send her our love too! Xxx
What a delight to get Big Salad on a Tuesday!
Yes! The ultimate mid-week pick me up!
Abby’s (entirely accurate) love letter to Chicago made me homesick, in the best way! 💔

Love some Cincinnati representation!
midwest is best!
I came to say the same thing!
Yes! The idea that living somewhere where your everyday financial stress is removed is very underrated. That comment really resonated with me.
Is this a good place to Ask For A Friend (me)?

Thrilled to find your Substack! Not sure how I missed it!

Anja, I recognize those beaches!! We live in such a great corner of the world 😊

So many movies I'm looking forward to after seeing the recaps from Sundance last week!!!
Also love your posts on where people live and what they love about and now this follow- a regular series please! 😊
I am so excited about the t-shirt rec!! Why is finding a good one that actually looks chic so tough?? Also, saving this nut-free granola recipe.
