I recently brought my 13 year old daughter with me to New York for a work trip. She is VERY into fashion and has a super distinctive and unique style, which is a joy to behold as she is confident and happy to not look like her peers, but also amazing to me as I have never had a good eye for putting outfits together. Anyway - while in New York, we stopped in a coffee shop for a quick break and a random New Yorker complimented her on her outfit!!! It was so validating for her!!!! And so special to witness! I love these New York street style posts!
One of my fondest New York memories from that age is dressing up in what I thought was the chicest outfit and dragging my dad to sit on the steps of the Met, just like in Gossip Girl.
I recently read the first Percy Jackson and the Olympians book to my child, and in the TV adaptation of that book, the Met steps are where Percy first discovers his powers. Now my child wants to go sit on the Met steps too.
We will definitely take him, but are prioritising travel to Europe and Asia and within Australia (at least until after the 2028 election), given the political climate in the US.
Vintage dresses and skirts primarily (her fav find is a pink lacy bridesmaid dress from the 1970s that she pairs with black Converse) but that day she was wearing a white tiered linen skirt with a black men's suit vest in a hounds-tooth print over a polo shirt - all thrifted. And she has this tortoiseshell barrette she has tied lace and ribbon on that she clips into her short curly hair nearly every day.
I really appreciate that your tips for not looking like a tourist are all about behavior and not clothing. When I am traveling I dress for comfort which is very midwestern of me but I don’t care. I am clearly not from Paris! But being respectful *should be* universal.
I don’t know how you knew to link that swimsuit roundup, but all week I’ve been thinking to myself “I need to go through the Big Salad archives to find that swimsuit issue”! Not only did you do the work for me, but the swimsuit I’ve been wishing I bought last summer (from a brand whose name I couldn’t remember—Kitty and Vibe, it turns out) was half-price and still available in my size!
I turn 40 next week, and a fun, unapologetic swimsuit feels like exactly the gift to give myself.
Can this be a regular series!? People watching is my jaaam, I love to see them, but mostly, I do it for the fashion inspo! These folks were stunning, and I love how put together and non-chalant they look! So beautiful!
I second this request! Any time I go to a major city I definitely look like a tourist because I am swivel-heading to check out everyone’s outfits 😆 I love seeing the unique (not just trendy) styles that people in cities are more likely to cultivate!
I think looking up is a great tip in any city. I'm in SF and there are so many amazizng details on buildings when you look upwards, same in London.
I shared this tip with a Lyft driver one time when we were stuck in traffic, and she was thrilled but then spent a little too much time looking up and not enough looking at the road :-)
You have such an eye, Joanna! Love all these looks. And gah…this! -
“Look up, if you’d like! People who are hurrying to work/school don’t usually look up, so maybe you’ll seem like a tourist, but who cares? The buildings here are SO beautiful. The yellow cabs. The green parks. The pink sunsets. The sailboats on the water. The starling murmurations. Even the pigeons. Go ahead and enjoy it all.”
A beautiful elegy to the magic that is singularly NYC!
I’m coming to the city at the end of the month with my almost-three-year-old son and my five month old son (and my husband and sister, of course!). This is the first trip my older son is full of excited anticipation for and I can’t wait to see his face full of wonder as he takes it all in. On his list of things he is most excited for: Brooklyn Bridge, going on a train, getting ramen, “the big park”, and pizza!
I have been planning my outfits! All I’m aiming for is feeling the cutest I’ve ever felt in an outfit I can easily baby wear and nurse my baby. So nothing major!
Haha nothing major indeed! I was feeling pretttty good about my outfit today with my new, thrifted shirt and then realized no one could see it because I’m baby wearing lol. I hope you guys have an awesome time and you feel great in all your outfits 😊
Your post filled with stylish women made me feel so heart-warmed!
I lived in NYC briefly in my early twenties and have so much fondness for the place. I haven’t been back since, so my memories of the city are perfectly preserved in the year 2012.
Now, I’m in the middle of writing the first draft of my first book—it’s about a vibrant group of painters and sculptors in 1930s New York. I feel like I’m suspended in enchanting Manhattan again! Writing about another set of stylish women! Can’t wait to visit soon for research. :)
So funny seeing two familiar faces I’ve known from past lives in two different cities. Hi Taylor, hey Owobu, you’re both looking lovely! This community of smart stylish women is always inspiring.

What does she like to wear?!

Eek! Thank you!
❤️ such good NY looks!
Leaving the backpack on while riding the subway has to be my next one thing I hate.

As a former (but forever) NYer, DEFINITELY look up! Unless you’re in Times Square. 🤣
Omg haha immediate panic attack

Can you ask Holly where her vest is from? Or does anyone recognize it?
It’s Zara!
