I can’t wait to try the MOMA drawing game that Abbey shared and I love love love the toddler dinner poem by Kate that Maria shared. You always have the best little nuggets and gems, Jo! Happy holidays! X
Gorgeous spot on the internet, just like Cup of Jo. Love how Joanna has always promoted other writers and Big Salad has given her/them/us another wonderful platform to read/learn/chat.
Is Jenny's W.A.I.T. advice from Anne Lamott? I remember her saying that in the Wiser than Me podcast, and have also been kind of mindblown about it and other nuggets of advice she gave. That podcast has been a HUGE and life-giving discovery for me this year, listening to Julia Louis-Dreyfus interview older women who are "wiser than her" — the Ina Garten and Isabelle Allende episodes were particularly meaningful if you haven't listened! I think this group would love it!
I have to thank Jenny because I use WAIT all the time - at work! It settles me when I’m talking to direct reports and reminds me to let them have the floor. It activates my listening.
I'm such a fan of Big Salad, but routinely disappointed when I click on a book link that I'm taken to Amazon. Why not bookshop.org? Why not select beloved independent bookstores for each newsletter you feature books in? Big Salad has such a large audience, you could actually make a tremendous impact on independent booksellers' businesses, and instead you're choosing to support a deeply problematic billionaire. A new year is upon is, please please please link to indy biz moving forward! Wishing Big Salad writers and readers all the best!
I completely agree! It's disheartening to see writers with large followings continue to support platforms like Amazon when linking to books in their posts. Fortunately, many writers are now using Bookshop, but I still occasionally come across those who don't. While these actions might seem insignificant, they can have a significant impact.
I found them a leopard pair at a consignment shop half a size too big and then six months later hunted them down on the internet because I didn't stop thinking about them. I feel famous to have them featured being worn by a hip person! They're more practical and durable than they look. Love them.
Also, Grace, I'm a huge fan of your comics and think you're the bomb. I also am so glad to see you at 40 Foot with your dad - I lost my dad unexpectedly this year; I'm 40 and he was 78. He was a helicopter pilot by profession and traveled all over the world until he retired at age 71. I had so hoped to go on a big trip with him in this coming decade, now that my kids are not teeny. I have few regrets, I wouldn't even really include this as a regret, just an "I wish." I'm so glad you got to do it with your dad. Good job carpe-ing diem.
I love Big Salad & this community! Hugs & I hope everyone has a 2025 full of joy, contentment & community.

Love Wiser than Me so much! Have you heard the latest episode with Nancy Pelosi?
I haven’t but I must!!

So many favorite discoveries this year! And most, like reading Ochuko, are substacks
WAIT is brilliant. Every parent should do it.
😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
Love these! Thanks for such a fun spot on the Internet.

I love your recommendation but realistically.... Cup of Jo probably gets commissions from the amazon links
I’m gonna remember Abbey’s parenting game when my almost 1 yr old gets a bit older
Bad Sisters is my favorite show right now. Fingers crossed for a Season 3!
What a roundup! Might need those clogs!💙🎁
