A few years ago, I finally convinced my husband to be the Garth to my Wayne. That was one of my favorite movies when I was growing up.
It was amazing. I have never had so much fun on Halloween (and I once had what seemed like my entire college show up for a small party in my apartment.) All night long all I heard was, “Party on, Wayne!” “Party on, Garth!” I had the biggest smile on my face and my cheeks ached the next day!
Two months ago, my daughter and her best friend got costumes- not for Halloween, just to walk around the park in. They chose a hotdog and a banana and I’ve never been so proud!
Haha 4 years ago I also dressed up as the log lady with a homemade soft log (though not as nice as Lauren O.'s!) and nobody knew who I was, either! And many people didnt realize I was wearing a costume, despite the log, perhaps because im always giving Margaret vibes? Anyhoo, a perfect costume, Lauren O. + husband!
I, too, suffered the fate of the unrecognized Log Lady one Halloween! My husband was Agent Cooper, too. I thought we looked *perfect* but having to explain it over and over really wore me down. (As a less crafty Lady, I definitely just grabbed an actual log from Prospect Park, haha.)
I'm still mad that all of my friends (and my husband, for that matter) continue to reject dressing up with me for Halloween as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito from the movie Twins.
First, I'm thrilled to see a picture of the legendary, Lauren O! Lauren, you look fabulous and exactly as you should based on all of your amazing comments.
Second, Joanna you can tell your sister that she has finally convinced me to invest in prescription sunglasses as well -- or at least I plan to do so in 2026. I've never loved transitions lenses but your sister's comment to you about the importance of wearing sunglasses from several years ago has always stuck in my head and I've finally decided to commit to a pair of regular prescription sunglasses, with Warby Parker frames no less! I think I'm going to go with the same frames as my everyday glasses, which coincidentally enough is called Hughes.
Listen, I normally balk at the prices on those luxury soaps and whatnot, but my mom RAVES about the scent of tomatoes on her hands. I absolutely had to buy her that heirloom tomato soap so she can enjoy it all winter long! Thank you for the recommendation.
I love Big Salad! It feels like a warm hug every Friday - right when I’m tired and mildly annoyed at… well, life! It even inspired me to start my own Substack (it’s totally different and in Spanish, but still), and I’m so grateful for that because today I read a post by Liz Moody that said the cure for burnout isn’t rest, it’s creativity! Thank you, Jo, for this little glimmer every Friday!

"not for halloween, just to walk around the park in" = those kids have life figured out!
I 1000% recommend "Home for Christmas" on Netflix! It's become my annual Christmas re-watch.
I think we should add "I still have the log, though, and it still rules." to the Lauren O. quotes archive.
hahahahahahaha
Home for Christmas is soo good!

Back at you, Liz! Someone asked if I was Mister Butts, as in the anthropomorphic cigarette from Doonesbury. Like, what?!
Same on Margaret vibes. Can it be a coincidence that half the essays I write are about owls?

Best thing about Warby Parker? (Besides the price…) Virtual try-on!
Who is this dog????
