Charlotte McConaghy's Once There Were Wolves is a book that stayed with me for months after I finished it. I can't wait to check out Wild Dark Shore! My reading theme this summer has been "coastal events" so I think this will fit well.
Two others I'd recommend that have similar themes and were excellent: Isola by Allegra Goodman (a woman on an early British colonial expedition is left on a remote island, I won't say more), and Whale Fall by Elizabeth O'Connor (a young woman living on a remote fishing island off the coast of Wales is hired as an assistant to two ethnographers coming to record island traditions).
I just finished Wild Dark Shore this week and loved it but with some complicated feelings. I thought I was reading what might be The Great Stepmother novel (always looking for positive representation in popular culture), especially one where the stepmother character doesn't have biological children, and I can't say the rest without spoilers, but, like, dang it.
Oh my gosh, so excited to see Charlotte McConaghy's book here. I taught climate fiction for years and her novels always make the syllabus. Everyone should read them all!

Are we having the same summer? I read Whale Fall immediately after Wild Dark Shore. Will check out Isola next!
